Press Release of the Management of the National Theatre in Belgrade

24 October 2025

The National Theatre in Belgrade hereby informs the public that over the past three weeks it has undertaken a series of activities aimed at eliminating all irregularities identified during the inspection conducted by the Sector for Emergency Management of the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Serbia.

A portion of the recommended measures has already been successfully implemented. Evacuation routes have been cleared and cleaned, thus significantly improving the safety of employees. The competent departments are fully engaged in addressing all deficiencies in the Fire Protection Plan, in accordance with the recommendations of the relevant institutions.

Simultaneously, the National Theatre has initiated a public procurement procedure for fire protection system inspection services, which requires adherence to prescribed procedures and legally defined timeframes.

It is particularly important to note that measures have been taken to enable the Ballet Ensemble of the National Theatre to continue preparations for the premiere of the ballet Don Quixote, scheduled to be performed by the end of the year.

In line with the ongoing activities, it is expected that after October 29 (depending on the course of the public procurement procedure), clearer guidelines and deadlines regarding the continuation of the regular repertoire season shall be defined.

The National Theatre in Belgrade emphasises that ensuring safety within the theatre building is a complex and challenging process, however, through consistent implementation of all legally prescribed measures and standards, the risk is minimised.

Meanwhile, the National Theatre continues its artistic activities outside the main building. During October, the artistic ensembles have performed on the stages of other theatres, and this practice will continue throughout November and December.

The Opera Ensemble plans to hold several concerts in towns across Serbia, the Drama Ensemble will continue touring and participating in festivals in the country and the region, while the Ballet Ensemble, in addition to preparing for the premiere of Don Quixote, will also perform concert programmes in several Serbian towns.

The management of the National Theatre kindly asks the audience for understanding and patience and expresses gratitude for the support shown to the artists and the institution during this period.
