The National Theatre in Belgrade

The National Theatre in Belgrade is one of Serbia’s most significant cultural institutions. Established in 1868, for over a century and a half it has served as a hub of theatrical life, a meeting place for artists and audiences, and a venue where productions of enduring artistic value are created.

Three artistic ensembles operate under its roof: Drama, Opera, and Ballet. They cultivate both national and global cultural heritage while simultaneously creating space for contemporary authors, new stage interpretations, and diverse artistic expressions.

The National Theatre’s repertoire encompasses classical works, contemporary plays, major operas, ballet performances, chamber music programs, and guest appearances by prominent domestic and international artists. Performances are staged on the Main Stage and the Raša Plaović Stage, as well as in other areas of the theatre.

In addition to producing and staging performances, the National Theatre preserves a rich historical and artistic archive, engages in publishing activities, and organizes exhibitions, discussions, educational programs, and other events designed for audiences of all generations.

Throughout its long history, the National Theatre has witnessed and participated in the most significant cultural and social transformations. Numerous giants of Serbian and global art have created on its stages, leaving behind a legacy that both compels and inspires new generations.
