Jovica Begojev – New Artistic Director of the National Theatre Ballet in Belgrade

The National Theatre in Belgrade has appointed principal ballet dancer Jovica Begojev, a distinguished artist with a rich performing career and a long-standing member of the Ballet of the National Theatre, as the new Artistic Director of the Ballet.

Jovica Begojev was born on 19 August 1983. He completed Ballet High School in 2001 in Novi Sad, in the class of Vera Felle and Dragan Jerinkić. Immediately after graduating, he got an engagement with the Ballet of the Serbian National Theatre in Novi Sad, where he soon became a soloist.

He joined the Ballet of the National Theatre in Belgrade in 2005, where he has since built a notable and successful artistic career.

Throughout his many years of stage work, he has performed numerous leading and solo roles in the classical repertoire. Particularly noteworthy are his performances as Prince Siegfried in Swan Lake and Basil in Don Quixote. Audiences have also had the opportunity to see him in productions such as Giselle, The Sleeping Beauty, La Bayadère, and La Sylphide

In addition to the classical repertoire, Begojev appeared in significant roles in contemporary ballet productions, including Queen Margot, Who’s Singin’ Over There?, Impure Blood, The Cage, Autumn Flowers, Interval, Six Dances, Step Lightly, and The Taming of the Shrew.

For his artistic work, he has received numerous awards, among them the “Milorad Mišković” Foundation Award (2012), the “Radomir Vučić” Award for his role as Armand Duval in La Dame aux Camélias (2011), as well as the National Theatre Award for Best Individual Premiere Artistic Achievement for his role as Prince Siegfried in Swan Lake.

With the appointment of Jovica Begojev as Artistic Director of the Ballet, the National Theatre in Belgrade continues to uphold high artistic standards and foster the development of ballet as an art form, relying on his experience, knowledge, and artistic integrity as one of the most prominent artists of his generation.
