The exhibition “A View from the Box - from the National Theatre Repository”, whose authors are Jelica Stevanović, Mirjana Odavić and Jovan Tarbuk, was opened at the National Theatre Museum in Belgrade on Friday, November 22, on the occasion of the 156th anniversary of the National Theatre.
The backbone of the exhibition, which was opened by the famous scenographer, academician Miodrag Tabački, consists of works of art by painters, sculptors, scenographers and costume designers who collaborated with the National Theatre in Belgrade during the century and a half long history of this theatre.
Among the exhibits are the works of famous artists who left the deepest mark in the history of the theatre with their creativity, including Jovan Bjelić, Milica Babić Jovanović, Vladimir Zagorodnjuk, Miomir Denić, Vladislav Lalicki, Dušan Ristić, Božana Jovanović, Mića Popović, Miodrag Tabački, Geroslav Zarić and others.
Exhibits that are kept in the National Theatre Museum, but also in the collections of scenery, costumes and props, artistic archive, in foyers and working rooms, are exhibited, along with a smaller number of copies of the material from the collections of the Museum of Theatrical Arts of Serbia and the Museum of Yugoslavia.
The replica of the royal box from the period 1904-1914 attracts special attention, which conveys the spirit of the time in which the National Theatre reflected social circumstances and was a bearer of national identity.
The exhibition also represents a significant moment in the field of art history: while preparing the exhibition, the authors made an extraordinary find - a hitherto unknown work by the famous Serbian artist Mladen Josić, who was the painter of the National Theatre from 1937 to 1939. This find is a real sensation and further enriches the exhibition.
