“Don Quixote” Ballet Premiere
30 January 2026
The ballet “Don Quixote,” one of the most famous works of classical ballet repertoire, based on the eponymous novel by Miguel de Cervantes, with music by Ludwig Minkus and choreographed by the renowned Spanish artist, José Carlos Martínez, premiered on 29 January to great success on the Main Stage of the National Theatre in Belgrade.
The new production, staged in the demanding choreography of Martínez, created according to the versions of Marius Petipa and Alexander Gorsky, brought a spectacular visual presentation and technically challenging dance.
Although the production is rooted in traditional choreographic expression, Martínez added his own artistic signature, bringing the authentic spirit of Spain to the stage. The new staging presents two love stories: between Don Quixote and Dulcinea, as well as Kitri and Basil, which develop simultaneously, guiding the audience through the scenes of joyful dances of the people and toreadors on a Spanish square, gypsy camp, the windmill fight, the imaginary “Dream” scene with Cupid and the Dryads, culminating in a spectacular flamenco finale at the Wedding scene.
The performance, filled with beautiful and melodic music, a joyful atmosphere, lavish costumes, and spectacular ballet sequences, delighted the audience in a packed theatre hall.
The principal soloist roles were performed by Sofia Matyushenscaya (Kitri) and Lev Semenov (Basil).
Other soloists included Ljiljana Velimirov (Dulcinea), Miloš Živanović (Don Quixote), Tijana Šebez (Mercedes), Branko Sarić (Espada), Maja Stojakov and Dejana Đorčevski (friends), Jana Zimonjić (Cupid), Čedomir Radonjić (Sancho Panza), Dmitriy Arbuzov (Gamash), Željko Grozdanović (Lorenzo), and Emanuele Frigo (Gypsy Chief).
Alongside the Ballet Ensemble, the Orchestra of the National Theatre in Belgrade, under the baton of Đorđe Stanković, participated in the production.
Repeat performances are scheduled for 30 January, 3 and 5 February, 12 and 25 February, as well as 3 and 5 March, giving the audience the opportunity to see four different soloist couples in the leading roles.
